The Barbour Living Heritage Village is in Newtown, Bonavista Bay, just ten minutes or less from my studio. My mom grew up in Newtown, and I spent lots of time there as a kid, at my grandparents' house just over on the point past the historic Barbour houses. The video also shows other sites in my region, slightly farther afield.

A new year with new focus here at Norton's Cove Studio.
I start my Surfacing project today, with the help of a NL Arts Council Project Grant, and am very excited to have started a new daily agenda, writing in all my plans for this year. My goal is to have a new body of work created by May/June, ready to go out in search of new venues to show my work, and gallery representatives to sell my work for me. Look for a new page on this site with photo updates of my progress as the next few months roll out...

This is a small commissioned piece that I did which I guess has been unwrapped by now. Hopefully it is being enjoyed in its new home in Nova Scotia. The property pictured belonged to Edwin Gill and then his son, Gerald Gill. It sits overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Newtown, just a ten minute drive from my studio. This house and the people who have lived in it have been an important part of my childhood and what led me to appreciate my heritage.

Don't you just love letters that begin like that? I've been waiting for just such a letter for the past week or so, wondering if I'm worthy of a Project Grant from the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council. Today is the day! I've been offered a grant for my 'Surfacing' project, and I'm thrilled!

There were 97 applications, and mine was one of the 53 successful projects. I sure won't take this lightly. I'll certainly blog about the project as it develops.

Update [31.10.11] I forgot to take pictures! But we got lots of snowflakes printed and ready for the kiln. With any luck, they'll be ready for The Christmas Craft Fair which starts next week! Alexis will have a booth there, and you'll also be able to get them at her shop on Quidi Vidi Road and my shop here in Brookfield.

We also printed six dogberry plates... we'll see how/if those turn out soon!

Place Cards

Here's the start of the 80 placecards I'm making for Feast of Pottery, a pottery exhibit and sale curated by Alexis Templeton. The show takes place at the Geocentre this weekend. You can find more info at Alexis' website. www.alexistempleton.com

To make the placecards, I've put a 4 x 6 piece of canson edition printmaking paper (the same I use for the mini-print product line) through my office printer to get the names of the 10 different potters who are taking part in the show. Then I placed the paper on a clean lino-cut plate (no ink) and pulled it through the etching press to emboss the paper. A bone folder makes a crisp edge, and voila!

The same printing plate will make a new edition of prints using dark grey ink and watercolour in a few days...

A collaboration between Alexis Templeton and myself... I carved the caplin images into the plates, and Alexis worked her magic on the beautiful glazes. This one is available for $150 + HST

Arts Council Project Grant Application

I have hundreds of photos of the ocean that I've taken while aboard our little sailboat, Garnet Star. These will be the inspiration for a new body of work... Working title: Surfacing or Surfaces

I applied for a Project Grant [wish me luck!] to help cover my expenses while working on a new body of work during the November-May period coming up. I'm planning a series of paintings, linocuts, etchings, and monotype prints to exhibit in the following months. If anyone knows of a gallery that would suit my style out there, please let me know, so I can apply for an exhibition there!

New Printing Plates

Multiple snowflake plate that I'm preparing to create more snowflakes by pressing a linoleum printing matrix into porcelin clay. Alexis Templeton then makes them into beautiful white snowflakes, with her gorgeous blue crystaline glaze on the plain side. They will be available for sale at both our studios, and at Alexis' booth at the Christmas Craft Fair at the Arts & Culture Centre in November.

Here's a daisy I drew last month, which I'll be turning into a limited edition lino-cut. The plan is to print it in black ink, then watercolouring in the green stem and yellow middle. An edition of 50 maybe?

An introduction to oil painting, with the basics of mixing colours and creating a painting. We will discuss choosing a subject, composition, and different techniques of applying paint. Bring several photos you are interested in working from.

September 9th and 10th, 10am-5pm each day

Why do I live where I do? Lots of tourists ask me this, wondering what would make an artist settle down in a place with seemingly no other artists around, in the middle of nowhere.

It's because this is my hometown. My son is the eighth generation of my family to live here in this part of Bonavista Bay. The first generation, William Davis, settled Pinchard's Island from Ringwood, England. That's my paternal g-g-g-g-grandfather. My mom's family is so closely associated with the same little island that she was six years old when her mom & dad floated their house across to Newtown at Joey Smallwood's insistence.

My husband's hometown too. His family roots come from Pool's Island, Swain's Island, and Greenspond, all short boat rides away from our home and studio in Brookfield.

Now if anyone can explain to me why I care about these things, and feel pulled by this place, while most of my close relatives don't feel the same connection, I would be grateful for the psycho-analysis!

Trinkets in Bags

Beached Whale in Cannister Cove, Greenspond

Yesterday, we visited the Greenpond walking trail in search of a beached whale that a visitor told me about. We found it in Cannister Cove, just beyond the point of the trail where you can choose between going all the way around the island, or walking back to the beginning via the middle of the island.

A humpback whale, belly up. We estimate that the whale is about 30 feet long with a tail about 5-6 feet wide. The smell while I took this picture was sickening as the wind was coming directly towards me. I could hardly smell a thing in the second picture.

Does anyone know why a whale would beach itself in this manner? Was it still alive when it came in? Or did the sea bring it here?
Someone asked me today if this happens very often- I don't think so.
This is the first time I've ever seen it. And Duke only saw one before, I think, when he was very young.

On a more positive note, there were lots of feeding whales at the beginning of the trail, blowing and rolling. Every sighting is thrilling, no matter how many times I see it!

Levi Davis

The window display has had a few people talking about my great grand-father, Levi Davis. In one conversation yesterday, I learned that a video made of grandfather back in 1977 is now available to view online through Memorial University's Digital Archives.

I watched the video this morning, and welled up a bit, especially at the end when he talks about my father bringing his vessel in to Wesleyville, when grandfather saw that dad had named his boat after him.

The name of the video is I Can Mind the Time.

Tara and Hazel, her Airdale, came to visit us for about a week- We had lots of walks with the doggies, a fab opening of her art exhibit at the Gallery of the Bonavista North Regional Museum in Wesleyville, and I took her 2nd painting workshop at the gallery. I made my first portraits in oil on plywood. The subject is my great grandfather, Levi Davis of Pound Cove.

Tara's husband, and their Labrador, Hannah, showed up then, and boy did Jack have fun with two dogs to play with all day!

Now that they're all gone home to Flatrock, we are all missing the extra company. Thank you Tara, and your escorts, for a fabulous week of art and friendship!

Bax Kean's old place? Or Janet & Duke's place?

Duke and I have owned this property, known to many as Bax Kean's place, since 1996. It took us a long time to get the house and shop back up to scratch, and have had lots of help from family and friends along the way.

I think we've kept the integrity of the original design of the buildings, but I also think we've added enough of ourselves that it doesn't look like the old Kean place anymore. We've added a greenhouse, a big woodshed, changed some colours, and have been working on the landscape too. It's been a challenge, but I would highly reccommend renovating an old place over building new. The character and history of the old buildings make them seem like well worn happy homes the minute you move in.

We sailed away for a year and a day, to the land where the bong trees grow... Well, not really. We sailed into Greenspond, cooked our supper, took Jack for a little walk, and sailed home again. Making it all fit

I've been doing some thinking about my business, my family life, and my full-time job with Davis Shipping Limited, trying to make it all fit together so that everyone is happy with what hours I devote to each facet of my life.

It is quite difficult for me, at times, to go against my instincts and spend time without any productivity. I realize though, that devoting time to having fun and vacation time with family and friends does lead to better productivity. It is with this in mind, that I have changed my work hours here at the studio.

Duke, Jack & I took a little boat excursion to Greenspond this afternoon after work... Did we see any icebergs? Not a glimpse. Seems they're extinct. But what a wonderful little trip! There was a Bald Eagle sitting on Bennett's High Island as we were leaving Wesleyville, there were Artic Tern, Turr, gulls, Cormorants, and Gannetts all very busy this evening. Then while at Greenspond walking Jack and talking to L & R, there were Minke whales breaching right next to shore! Seems the caplin have arrived. All this natural beauty and wonderment, and I forgot to bring my camera.

Another 2009 iceberg: It was out past Offer Island. The original (top) was painted in Greenspond then I photocopied a photocopy in black and white (bottom) and coloured it in pencil crayon... love the depth and brown contrast with orange outline.

I love seeing how the same subject matter is portrayed by different artists.

The 2011 See How It's Made poster

The Newfoundland & Labrador government has been doing this See How It's Made campaign for a while now, and I think it's a fantastic idea. They are helping artists and craftspeople like me promote their craft and to get their audience more involved.
I always love having people drop by for a visit while I'm in the middle of making a new print- most people don't know how a print is made, and visitors always go away with a far greater appreciation for the amount of hand-crafting that goes into the process. Check out their website, and look for a printed brochure that will give you a schedule of craft demonstrations this summer in studios and shops around the province.

Iceberg count: Zip. But I can smell them coming. There's a freshness in the air since last night that makes me think that the icebergs are lurking in the fog out there.

These little icebergs came down from Ontario today. Paul Kirby makes them, and Paul has to live in Ontario all winter. So while he's dreaming of coming back to Greenspond for the summer and fall, he makes images indicative of Newfoundland. Those Kirbys from 'pond are a wonderful artsy crowd, and I get the pleasure of having most of them visit my shop every year. Paul will be teaching our Tuesday morning art class this summer- check out the classes & workshops page for info. I'm looking forward to being his student again. Last summer we had a lovely group that had lots of fun in the loft, following Paul's lead.

However, I did see some pretty cool things on the weekend... Duke, Jack & I drove to Bonavista to see the big Rock & Roll Show at The Garrick Theatre. Jack wasn't actually allowed in... Why are dogs not expected to enjoy a good concert?

First up, Mark Bragg & The Butchers were great!
Mark doesn't stay still long enough to get a clear shot of him though!
Mark, how about opening the Mark Bragg School of Dance? It would be a hit!

Then for the second part of the concert, The Novaks!
Fantastic! Lots of great new songs I hadn't heard before, too.
Thanks to The Garrick for offering up such a nice venue!

While on the road, I dropped off some artwork at The House of Diamonds in Glovertown, and at Neil's Yard in Bonavista. Please drop in to those establishments, both of which are open and ready to show off all the art and craft they have gathered together.

We had a great visit with the Patersons in Upper Amherst Cove. Paterson Woodworking is a must see for anyone travelling in that area. Cool indeed!

This digital print by Wesleyville/St. John's resident Jennifer Oille Sinclair, shows the floundering of an iceberg in five shots. Its a large piece, 24 x 36 inches.

This little watercolour painting by Eric is based on an iceberg seen at Lumsden North. Lumsden and Cape Freels have some of the nicest sandiest beaches in the province, and are lovely iceberg watching zones.

Also great dog running areas, as Jack will tell you! Lots of shells, sticks, and smelly things to chew on for a Labrador.

But you can still buy one of three available etchings from this edition. Iceberg at the Main was created just after my Greenspond exhibit at the Craft Council Gallery. It is a variable edition, meaning each impression is inked a little differently.

When standing on Greenspond island, looking towards mainland Newfoundland, a Greensponder might describe the view as 'at the main'. Eric Burry gave me the title for this print.

All three have been framed, and two can be seen under Art by Janet Davis if you scroll way down.

Icebergs in June, which began last year at Alexis Templeton's studio, came to be at Norton's Cove Studio this year for two reasons: one being that we might actually see some icebergs in June in Brookfield; two being that the signs Alexis had made up fit my windows too.

I've changed the event to happen over the entire month, as my out-of-town location makes things a little different than Alexis' city weekend events.

So here we are at day one. Duke and I went sailing, but didn't see any icebergs. It was cold enough that you'd think there was ice all around, but no.

I'll be keeping a daily blog on events, visitors, and special bergy things for sale here at the studio, made by myself and my artsy friends. There are some beautiful things to see already, and there are lots more on their way. Stop by for a visit, make a special trip, stay tuned!

Victoria Day Weekend

With the weekend upon us again, I'm thinking how tough it'll be to top last weekend!

Alexis Templeton and her family came for a visit, and I enjoyed having them here immensely.

This is the reason Frederick has been saving his money
since last June to buy a dune buggy.

We visited one of the beaches at Cape Island, where our brave children ran in the sand and climbed the dunes sans footwear.

We ate local crab and lobster amongst a whole wack of other goodies, like my mother-in-law's caramel tarts.

We had some fun playing with clay... we printed a couple of my lino-cut plates onto clay in my etching press, trimmed the edges, and rolled up the edges to make platters.

Alexis has brought them all back to her studio to dry, fire, glaze, fire again, all that chemical reaction stuff that I don't understand! I can't wait to see the finished product! We made a few tiles for testing Alexis' different glaze mixes on too. We're thinking about a series of plates (use that term in the sense of printmaking or pottery!) to make together in the future. I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

Dory

This 2005 image is based on the traditional Banks dory. With a flat bottom, these small wooden boats were stackable and sat on the deck of a fishing schooner until fishermen lowered them into the water and rowed to their desired location, bringing a doryload of fish back to the main vessel.
