Day Eleven: July 9th July 09 2015, 0 Comments

These folks found a Norse site based on the Sagas in L'Anse Aux Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland.
The site was excavated between 1960 and 1967 and proves the presence of the Norse here about 1000 years ago.

There are several buildings which have been created which fit the mounds which are still visible nearby in the park.
They are built of peat bog bricks and sod, with wooden frame support system inside.
There are fires going inside, and you can really get a sense of how cozy these spaces would have been for the real characters of this story.

The forge was the crowning part of the tour, with this fellow showing us how the Norse made nails from bog ore found nearby.
I got the opportunity to pump the bellows (poorly- apparently I have no rythm) and afterwards I was awarded the crafted nail as a prize.

My pictures do not do the site justice.
It was a wow kind of a day again, and I would highly recommend going to see it yourself.
Fred has decided he'd like to learn how to be a blacksmith.
Oh, and we're supposed to be building a replica Norse firepit when we get home.

Sailing tomorrow?  I'm not sure.  The weather forecast is not being friendly to us at all.  We'll see how things look in the morning.
